------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Deal with data using Boolean Tables ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Shock your brain into remembering and being creative by using alternative ways of seeing things." I made that quote up, but there's something to it that I've seen in several artists. You'll find this idea under the name "changing perspec tives" or paradigms or "thinking outside the box" or some other expression that 's been perverted by corporates by reducing it to a tool for profit. In a way, we artists are also using it for a certain kind of "profit" which is to seek ne w ways to communicate emotions. That's my point of view. Some artists seek othe r things. In any case, Boolean tables is one way to represent data that could l ead you to discover new interesting associations. The idea ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I have here a series of characters who all have different features. I know many people who have a lot of OCs. I do and will describe some of them using wh at we call "binary features". Either a character has a feature, or does not. No other, third way, such as "I don't know" or "the feature is small". I display t he characters in the lines of a table; the features are the columns; and I put an "X" at the intersection of line A and column B if the character A has the fe ature B. | has boobs | has milk | is fat | has eyes | is soft | has a tail ------+-----------+----------+--------+----------+---------+------------+ Carol | X | X | X | | X | X Karol | X | X | X | X | X | Robot | X | X | | X | | Snake | | | | | X | X Oculle| X | X | | X | | Note that I expressed the features as "yes-no" questions: . Does Carol have boobs? (yes) -> X . Does the Robot have milk? (yes) -> X . Is the Robot fat? (no) -> etc. _____ [\ | /----\ ? ?-- ) o|)--?.........eye(s)........... / O \ ( ) | \ / (no tail) /\_\|/ \----/ (not fat) -/ /___ _\ \___ (not soft) ( ) \_\___\__ _/ / /\ / \\ \ \ (__ (_ / \ / \\ ) ).........boobs............' \ (__ \ / \\____/'_/ \___\/\ \ / ) | ' ' / \ \ /-----m/C \ ' ' / \ p\m / ' | / / \'...........milk.............' | / ( ' \ | Oculle, the te'cher, and the Robot, the robot' have the same features. If I wanted to d'stinguish them in the table, I would add another column su ch as "is metallic"'- Oculle is not metallic, but'the Robot is. Going Further ------'---------------------------------------------------------- ' Reading this table, you can immediately see which group of character is fat, wh ich has boobs, etc. This is fun but I'm sure you can find more ways of reading the table. Find more ways of displaying it, too. Put characters together in oth er ways. Create a new character with a special combination of features you've n ever done before. Add a third dimension to your table by using colors. The poss ibilities!...
